X-Men: Omega Point
Wakanda is a kingdom in central Africa that is over 4,000 years old, founded by a king named Bashenga at a time contemporary with the Kingdom of Kerma and Egypt’s Middle Kingdom. The king holds the title of “the Black Panther,” the chosen of Wakanda’s panther goddess, Bast. The current Black Panther is T’Challa.
Throughout its long history, Wakanda has never been conquered. During the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, a number of European powers attempted to colonize Africa, but never made it much further than the coastal regions, largely because of Wakanda’s influence.
Wakanda controls over 99% of the world’s supply of a valuable rare-earth mineral called vibranium. They have released very little of this mineral, keeping the price extraordinarily high by controlling the supply. T’Challa and his predecessor, T’Chaka, used the money from selling vibranium to invest heavily in the country’s schools, sciences, and arts. Wakanda is one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, standing aloof from the Cold War conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union.
Wakanda has always been a very isolationist country. The waiting list even for a short-term visa to visit Wakanda takes years.
